I have a book originally published in london in 1883, but re-published in 1970 in New York. The book contains no copyright statement. I want to know whether I can reproduce a chapter from the book in my own book. Can you advise me on this matter?

I've been asked to check about the copyright regulations for disabled patrons who want to copy an entire book if they do not own the book. Previously, the Library's Copy Services would not copy an entire book unless the patron owned it. Sometimes patrons with visual impairments need the print enlarged in order to see it. I've also emailed the Office of Disability Services to ask if he can suggest any guidelines. Thanks.

I have a student in my class who uses Photoshop to manipulate images. For instance, he has taken the Chicago Bulls logo (the angry-looking red bull) and blurred the image and added some text at the top. Right now, the image is sitting on the student's webfolio (so access is limited). However, I would like to treat this as a teachable moment, especially since manipulating graphics like this is a major interest of his. If this were to be more widely accessible, would the student have to obtain permission from the Chicago Bulls to use the logo, or is it not necessary since he has changed the image? Should he at least cite the source from which he retrieved the original iamge? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'm wondering about the rights to the AP Photo Archive. The Vice Chancellor and Provost Committee on Academic Integrity is designing some posters to place on kiosks around campus (so this is a promotional/advertising context) and wants to use photos of public figures, politicians and celebrities that are on AP Photo Archive (Accunet). But I'm not sure that these can be used for other than NEWS purposes or in-class assignments. I would appreciate your advice as soon as possible. What rights do we have with those photos?

I work in the reserves department at the library. We have been asked by a faculty member to scan an entire book for online reserves. Normally this is not something we would do however, this work is no longer in print. Also, the book was last published in 1999. I am wondering if we should scan the book because it is out of print or if this is a copyright problem?

We are in the process of developing a digital audio service which will provide online access to copies of musical works used in teaching SU courses. Materials will either be owned by SU Library or by the teaching faculty member. Access will be restricted to SU users for the duration of the class. In general, we plan to follow the guidelines developed by the Music Library Association; see:

What are the copyright implications of scanning an article from, for example, the NYT that appears the night before a class and posting it on the course web site for students to look at before they come to class in the morning. I believe that it would be acceptable to make copies of that article and distribute the next day, but can it be posted on the web site instead?
