Jim Howe to speak at Library Associates Luncheon May 1

Syracuse University Library Associates annual spring luncheon will be held on Friday, May 1, at 12 p.m. in the Milton Atrium of the Life Sciences Complex. The keynote speaker will be Jim Howe, Executive Director of the Nature Conservancy of Western and Central New York, who will discuss the Conservancy's overall goal of protecting at least 10% of every major habitat type on Earth by 2015.

Howe is co-author of “Balancing Nature and Commerce in Gateway Communities” (Island Press, 1997), a book intended to help communities preserve their quality of life in the face of heavy growth and development pressures. He serves on the New York State Advisory Board of the Land Trust Alliance and the board of trustees of the Black River Environmental Improvement Association. Howe holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's degree in natural resources study from Cornell University.

Tickets to the luncheon are $25 for Library Associates members, $30 for the public. For reservation information, contact Kathleen White at kswhite@syr.edu or 443-8782. Free event parking is available in the Booth Garage, on the corner of Waverly and Comstock avenues.
