Cataloging Department Prepares for the 21st Century Library When you look at the Library’s strategic directions and initiatives, more than half of them include a path running right through room 550. If you’re looking to “create and deploy library technology offerings that meet users' needs and expectations” and to “build library services and add resources based on identified academic program needs”; then you’re probably talking about e-resources and new digital projects. If you want a “more inviting physical environment with space for collaborative areas and smart classrooms as well as quiet space”, that will necessitate an off-site storage facility. And before that can become a reality all materials headed there will need to be fully cataloged and bar coded. These new directions have brought about changes in the departmental structure which were announced last month. The cataloging team had been hard at work over the years producing records for new projects, keeping up with the always challenging e-resources, working on converting old card file records to online ones and still processing the constant influx of new materials. That was before a new learning commons, Belfer cylinder digitalization, and an off-site storage facility became more than just a nice idea. With all these new projects to be completed some rethinking and realignment needed to be done. |
