Dean Suzanne Thorin is hitting the road this school year, giving an hour long presentation about the Library in 12 cities around the country. Suzanne and David Murray, Ass't Dean for Advancement, are inviting all local alumni and friends in each city to learn about the Library's central role in student learning. We had more than 50 people in New York City and more than 40 in Washington, DC.

bookmakingDepartment of Preservation and Conservation Hosts 2nd Annual Bookmaking Workshop

On Friday, August 22nd, the Department of Preservation and Conservation was pleased to host a bookmaking workshop for the children of Syracuse University Library staff. A similar, much smaller workshop was held last year, leading to requests for wider participation, something we were able to honor this year with great success. It is something we will gladly repeat in the future for kids small and large.

physicslibFarewell to the Physics Library

Competing demands for space in the physics building resulted in a joint decision between the SU Library and the Physics Department to close the Physics Library and move its monograph collections to the Science and Technology Library (SciTech). The last date of operation for the library was May 9, 2008. The closure was bittersweet, and the faculty, staff, and students of the department held a farewell party to celebrate its long association with the library on May 15.

Library Picnic is "Magical"

The afternoon of August 14th found many members of the SU Library staff gathered at Cedar Bay Park in DeWitt to enjoy a beautiful day, wonderful company, great food, and not one, but TWO magicians. The Twin Magicians capped the day with feats of prestidigitation, juggling, jokes and balloon creations much to the enjoyment of children of all ages.

Out of the Sky sculpture Library Associates Host Werner Pfeiffer's "Out of the Sky"

The artist book Out of the Sky: 9/11, a Tribute is Werner Pfeiffer's tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In his special "lecture," presented on September 11, 2008 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, Pfeiffer assembled Out of the Sky while commenting on the technique and inspiration behind it.

Bird Library now open 24 hours a day, Sunday through Friday

Beginning this semester, the Learning Commons on the lower three floors
of E.S. Bird Library will remain open from Sunday at 10 a.m. through Friday at 10 p.m.

New Business Service Hours

Effective Monday August 25th, the Business Services Office will be open Monday - Thursday 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM and on Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM with exception during peak times.

End Processing Move

Effective by September 25 end-processing will have moved from the basement in Preservation back to Cataloging on the fifth floor.

Venda Card Relocated

In preparation for the move and construction of a “New Reference/Circulation Desk” the two Venda-card machines and a quarter change machines that were located next to the book return slot have been moved and are now located next to the copy machines on the first floor, right outside room 100.

Terriruth ‘TC’ Carrier has accepted the position as our new Temporary Project manager for the Syracuse University Library. She will be in the Administration Suite on the 2nd floor, working for Bobbi Gwilt.

Scott Warren has started as Bibliographer for Science and Technology. He is currently still at the main science library in Carnegie but will soon move into his office in room 548 on the 5th floor of Bird Library, Ext. 9771.

Kevin Dames has accepted the position of the new Copyright Officer for the Syracuse University Library. His office is room 231 on the second floor and his Ext. is 8508.

Charlotte Hess has started her position as Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communications. Her office is in room 219C in the Administration Offices, Ext. 5528.

Robert Cleary has agreed to temporarily lead the project for the implementation of MetaLib for the Library.

Jenna Mayotte has accepted responsibly for the interface updates to the Whitman Project MetaLib and Gateway sites.

Dale King has accepted the position as the new Interim Director of Organization Services.

Russell Silverstein has accepted the position as Interim Director of LITS.

Peter Verheyen has moved into his new office in the Preservation area of the basement. His phone number remains Ext 9756.

Ann Skiold, Art Librarian here at the Syracuse University Library, will be joining the library staff of Syracuse University in Florence from August 2008- June 2009. We all wish her the best of luck on her endeavor.

Gurnek Singh, Librarian and South Asian Studies specialist retired effective July 31. A farewell reception was attended by Mr. Singh's many friends and colleagues, as well as his wife, children grandchildren and other family members. We wish him the best of luck in his retirement.For pictures of the event Click here.

Peggy Palerino, a Library Technician here at Syracuse University has announced her plans to retire. Her last day will be November 5th.

Gregory Brown, Ozemede Kadiri, Laura Lesswing, John (Mike) Puckett, and Scott Juskiewicz have resigned from their positions at the Syracuse University Library. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Angela Ramnarine-Rieks has left her position as Library Web Administrator in order to pursue a doctoral degree from the iSchool here at Syracuse University

Norma Jean Hussong, who once served as David Stams secretary, passed away June 26th 2008. She is survived by her two cousins, Bette Mindler and Cindy King. We will all miss her and send our condolences to her family.

SU Changes Temperature Policy to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

By reducing the temperature of University-occupied spaces by two degrees in the heating season, and raising the temperature threshold one degree in the cooling season, the University will realize an annual reduction of 1,683 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
