Richard Coombs Receives 2007 Library Distinguished Service Award
Richard Coombs, Library Technician in Media Services, has been named recipient of the 2007 Syracuse University Library Distinguished Service Award. The annual award is given to an employee who has made significant contributions to the service of the library user community. |
Contributed by Mary Jane Poulin The staff of Science and Technology Services held the second Science and Engineering Information Fair at the Science and Technology Library on October 2, 2007. The fair, which was geared especially to graduate students and faculty, attracted over 244 attendees from seventeen different departments–almost double the amount from last year’s fair held at the Schine Student Center. |

On Thursday October 4, 2007, Syracuse Unversity Science and Technology Library and the SU Department of Mathematics celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Carnegie Library. Completed in September of 1907, the SU Carnegie Library is one of over 3,000 libraries built through the generosity of Andrew Carnegie. |

On May 31, 2007, Instructional Services held its fourth annual End-of-the-Year Instruction Party to thank all Library staff who participated in instructional events during the 2006-2007 academic year and to present awards to individuals who provided particularly outstanding instructional service. |

Since September, all services for the Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive have been provided through the Arts and Humanities Services Department.

“Free Food for Thought”: On Sunday, August 26, E.S. Bird Library was bursting with excitement as new and returning students participated in a new library event to kick off the school year. About 135 people attended the event, called “Free Food for Thought,” which involved a self-paced activity to introduce students to the Library, a raffle, refreshments, and information on Library resources and services. |
Library of Congress and New York Center for the Book Sponsor Youth Reading and Writing Contest The New York Center for the Book, located at Syracuse University Library, is again collaborating with the Library of Congress in an annual, nationwide program to encourage reading and writing among students. |

| Raymond von Dran Remembered by Community The Syracuse University community paid its final respects to Raymond F. von Dran, dean emeritus of Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, during a memorial service on September 7 in Hendricks Chapel. |
iSchool Secures Grant to Fund Five Future Library Professors The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University (iSchool) has received an $885,600 grant from the Laura Bush 21st Century Library Program, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, to support a future generation of library science faculty. The monies will cover four years of tuition for five Ph.D. students who are interested in pursuing academic careers in library and information science. The five recipients will also receive a living stipend. |

Ann Skiold, Arts and Humanities has had a collage accepted by "Stone Canoe: A Journal of Arts and Ideas From Upstate New York." The University publication which premiered in March has already won rave reviews and a bronze medal in the anthology category of the 2007 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Jason Stone, a new member of the Access and Preservation Services, Access Services Unit, co-authored a paper while a senior at Hartwick College. The paper was just published in the journal Pacific Affairs. Jason went to Sri Lanka in July 2006 and interviewed Buddhist monks about politics and Buddhism in the context of ethnic conflict.
Lindsey Hunt, daughter of Patricia Hunt (Social Science Research and Cataloging) graduated May 27, 2007 from Keuka College with a bachelor's degree in Educational Studies with a concentration in Child and Family Studies. Lindsey plans to pursue a career as a day care, nursery or pre-K teacher/administrator. She worked this summer as a full-time substitute at Upstate Hospital's Child Care Center, where she also interned her senior year. Congratulations to Lindsey.
Angela Belle and Vincent Santoro were married on Saturday, June 30th at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse. A reception was held at the Double Tree Hotel in East Syracuse. Angela is the daughter of Julie Belle of the Professional Programs and User Services/Instruction Services Departments. Congratulations Angela, Vincent, and their families.
Peter Verheyen (SCRC) spoke on the planning for and management of digital projects at the Planning for and Managing Digital Projects on September 10. Topics included how to select collections for digitization, developing project proposals, and preparing grant applications, workflows, publishing, and the impact on public services. The daylong workshop was well attended by a lively audience of 30 from throughout the Central New York region, and was part of CLRC/SCLRC Ready, Set, Digitize! Series held in Cortland. Bill Garrison, Syracuse University Library’s deputy university librarian and associate dean of libraries, presented a paper at the recent World Library and Information Congress: 73rd IFLA General Conference and Council in South Africa. |
