Internship Opportunities Sought

Several MLS students from the School of Information Studies are looking for internships here at SUL. This is a superb opportunity to collaborate with IST, share your knowledge and experience with a new librarian, and gain insight into current library science curriculum topics. You'll probably also get to meet some pretty amazing young people!

If your department would be interested in learning more about hosting an intern either this semester or in the future, please contact Gerri McCarthy at ext 3855.

Update on 1916 and Spector Rooms

Cindy Cost, AUL for Organization Services reports that although renovation continues to convert the 1916 room into the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, the work has fallen a bit behind schedule. Therefore the room will not be available for use during the month of February. Work is also continuing on the Spector room to complete the installation of new A-V equipment. This is also expected to be completed by the end of February. If you have events planned for these rooms during this month please contact Nancy Cohen to see about rescheduling.

With these two room out of service please be mindful of group size when requesting a meeting room.  Room 503, the Cave, and Room 123 are all available to accommodate smaller groups. Library staff may also schedule the corner seminar rooms for small group meetings. Hillyer should be reserved only for larger groups. The ETC may also be available on some "even" days when it is normally used by ITS (formerly CMS). Check with Julie Belle in Instructional Services for availability.

Finally, please try to remember to cancel your reservation if you find that you do not need a room that you scheduled, so the room can be made available to others.

Michael Pasqualoni, Instructional Services, will once again be a moderator at this year's SU campus tournament of "College Bowl," the well-known academic trivia competition, Saturday - Feb. 4 at Schine Student Center.

Quick - for 10 points - Who was TV's "GE College Bowl" host from 1959 - 1962? Answer

Robert Cleary, assistant department head – Acquisition Services, recently learned that his 2002 master’s thesis is required reading for a graduate course in education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Robert spent four years researching and writing “The Education of Mexican-Americans in Kansas City, Kansas, 1916-1951,” for his M.A. in American History, which he completed ten days before starting work at SUL.  Professor Stuart McAninch explained, “I am the historian of education on faculty at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  Approximately a year ago, I read your master's thesis.  What particularly struck me about it in terms of how I might use it in my teaching is that it would enable me to discuss issues of race and schooling in the Kansas City metropolitan area in terms other than the traditional black/white dichotomy (particularly in light of the rapidly growing population of Latino children in area schools).  While I have referred to your analysis in my courses and have included the thesis in my bibliography for the historical foundations course, I have not used it as a text.  However, this semester I will ask the students in my Ed.D. seminar (who are all area school teachers or administrators) to read your thesis in conjunction with work by Sherry Schirmer and Kevin Fox Gotham.” The entire thesis can be found at

Getting to Know You

Rosemarie Romano

Temporary Reference Librarian PPRS - Reference Desk

Rosemarie (or Romy) received her B.A. in French and an M.L.S. in Information Studies from Syracuse University. Prior to accepting this position at SUL, she was Access Services Librarian at SU's Barclay Law Library from 2002-2005. Although that title may suggest otherwise, Rosemarie says she spent half of her time doing original cataloging and the other half as a reference librarian. Her job duties also included collection development and faculty liaison work. Before that time she worked as a contract cataloger for the Law Library while simultaneously holding a full-time job as Librarian at the law firm of Scolaro, Shulman, Cohen, Fetter & Burstein, P.C.

Rosemarie has also been a Librarian/Archivist and Assistant Curator of Education at the Everson Museum of Art, and worked on state-funded Records Management and Archives projects for the City of Auburn and the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES for several years where she wrote grants, arranged and described local government records, and planned and implemented records management and archival preservation projects.

She is a member of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and a member and Past President of the Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York (ALLUNY).

Personnel Announcements

Our sincere condolences are extended to Lee Radigan, ITS, whose mother, Jean Wigner passed away on January 3 after a long illness.

Everyone is reminded to exercise special care when walking on the sidewalks. The downside to our "snowless winter" is an abundance of clear sidewalks which easily become ice covered with a bit of rain and colder temperatures. A number of people have already discovered how quickly you can lose your footing under those conditions. If you do have a fall and believe you may have injured yourself, ask someone to call for help.  Please don't try to walk and possibly do more damage. The number to phone in an emergency from a cellular phone is #78 (#SU).

Training & Development

Organization Services is pleased to be able to offer a variety of instructor-led training classes for SUL staff. Enrolling in these classes is done by visiting the Staff Web page http://libweb.syr.edu/ and clicking on the Training link or directly at https://libtrain.syr.edu/. You will need your netid and password to access the site.

Please speak with your supervisor before enrolling and enter the date and time on your personal calendar. While we do understand that emergencies do occur, we must ask that you let Gerri McCarthy know 2 days before the class if you are not going to be able to attend. This allows us to offer the seat to someone else if the class is full, or reschedule the class if we have dropped below a minimum number of participants.
