PlasticsSU Library Acquires National Plastic Center Collection

Late last week, the Library and the National Plastics Center in Leominster, Mass., signed a memorandum of understanding transferring the Center’s entire collection to the Library. This action creates the “National Plastics Center at Syracuse University” and represents a huge opportunity for growth and development for the Library and for many schools and colleges.

Dean Suzanne Thorin, with the able assistance of Ass't Dean for Advancement, David Murray (aka Vanna White) presented the Library’s hour-long “road show” to Library staff in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons on October 23rd. Suzanne and David are literally touring the country this year (see September Library News) inviting alumni and friends in 12 cities to learn about the Library's central role in student learning.

Disability Mentoring Day and Visit from Aurora

Mentoring day was a truly successfully day. The Library hosted four mentees on October 15th from 10am - noon. The mentees toured the Library and observed a variety of tasks. One particularly articulate mentee and his job coach from Enable explained his interest in part time work such as directing Library patrons on the first floor.

SULA chair, Melinda Dermody welcomed the assembled group and presented an item for vote; an amendment of the SULA bylaws. End Process Move

stairsLibrary Stairs Get Facelift

The stairs on the southwest corner of Bird (leading to the street near to Schine) have been undergoing repair over the last few weeks. Not just a quick patch, but a real, rip-everything-out-and-start-over job. They should be finished by the end of the month and already for the boots, shovels and salt soon coming their way.

Michael Dermody has accepted the position as the new Temporary Assistant Librarian/Project Archivist. He started October 1 and is located in Bird Library’s Special Collections Research Center, 6th floor.

Marianne Hanley has been hired as an Office Supervisor in the Cataloging Department. She will be starting October 20.

Peggy Palerino has announced her retirement after 19 years of service to Syracuse University Bird Library.

A party will be held for her Thursday, October 30, from 2:30-3:30 in the Hillyer Room.

Oze Kadiri had resigned from his position in the Acquisitions Department on the 5th floor of Bird Library.
