Welcome to Library Online

Gerri McCarthy

After a short hiatus, the Library staff newsletter is back in a brand new format - online, and with a brand new editor (or as I prefer to think of myself - coordinator) - Gerri McCarthy. Contributions of articles, announcements, and photos are heartily encouraged from all staff since, as most of you know, I've only been here a few months so leaving it all up to me is going to result in a very short publication!  We are going to be publishing monthly to start, but because of the capabilities of online, we look forward to being able to update content more frequently.

To keep our front page as short as possible, most stories will start here, but have a link to the complete article on another page. Click here for complete story. (OK, here we go!)

Work Begins on 1916 and Spector Rooms

"The drapes are down!" is the word from the 1916 Room. Work finally began Thursday, December 16th to remodel the Library's largest meeting and general purpose room into the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons.  Included in the renovation will be new carpeting, drapes, furniture, lectern, projection screen, sound system and a full range of A/V equipment.  The room which is expected to reopen in early February, will be a single multi-purpose room for the use of students, faculty, and staff, accommodating larger lectures as well as smaller groups.

Also under construction will be the 6th floor Spector Room. Renovation scheduled to be completed in late January will include new multi media equipment along with remodeling and new furniture.

Library’s 15th Annual Distinguished Service Award

The DSA Selection Panel

(Sue Miller – Chair, Wendy Bousfield, Diane Cooter, Betty Johnson-Adair, Charlie Russo)

When Randy Money began duties as the Library's computer trainer back in the late 1980s, the technology was in its infancy here. Randy introduced the staff to "new" programs such as email, word processing, and spreadsheets in the days before GroupWise and Microsoft Office and the modern Internet browsers. DOS and its complicated system of commands was king.

Later, Randy became the Library's first Technology Associate, dealing with the large number of PCs and printers in the Information Management Services Department, "assisting a large, diverse staff whose information technology skills have ranged from novice to power-user level."Click here for complete story

Positive Ways of Coping with Change:  A Library Peer to Peer Dialog

Lydia Wasylenko, SULA

Although this program, presented May 11, was prompted by Syracuse University Library’s recent reorganization, the content was relevant for anyone undergoing any kind of change or transition in life. Pat Demyan, Director of Syracuse University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) and Susan Winkert, FSAP Staff Therapist acted as co-facilitators.

Pat and Susan provided a conceptual framework to inform discussion, starting with the key ideas of “change” (“what happens”) and “resiliency” (“who you are”). When change happens, one of the most important areas you can control is yourself, focusing on how you react, what you do, and how you feel.

Librarians Attend 12th National ACRL Conference in Minneapolis

Janet Pease, RES – Science & Technology Services

Several SUL Librarians attended the 12th National ACRL Conference in Minneapolis from April 7-10, 2004. The title of the conference was “Currents and Convergence: Navigating the Rivers of Change.”  Besides having unusually terrific weather (sunny and mid-60’s to 70’s) every day, the conference itself was very interesting and informative. There were seven conference theme tracks from which participants could choose: Changing Environments and Cultures, Changing Political Realities, Converging and Collaborating, Evolving Modes of Scholarly Communication, Managing Electronic and Digital Information, Redefining Traditions, and Teaching and Learning. There were also workshops and excellent poster sessions and exhibits to view. Click here for complete story

Chancellor Cantor Meets with SUL Staff Members

Lydia Wasylenko, Arts & Humanities Services

At the invitation of the Syracuse University Library Assembly (SULA), Chancellor Nancy Cantor visited E.S. Bird Library to meet with SULA membership on March 22, 2005. Chancellor Cantor began by indicating that she concurs with the sentiment that “the library is the heart of an academic institution,” and expressed hopes that this would be the first of many conversations.

The Chancellor cited a quotation from a card she had received upon her arrival at Syracuse University:  “An academic institution at its best looks inwardly and opens up a window unto the world.”  Click here for complete story

Books on Ice: British and American Literature of Polar Exploration

Curated by David & Deirdre Stam

For daring adventurers in both North and South Polar regions, books seem to have been as essential as pemmican, primus stoves, fuel, and furs.  Exploration ships had large libraries, and sledging journeys often included a few books for idle times. They were routinely hauled to the far reaches of cold regions, and were even found with the frozen bodies of those unlucky enough not to return.

On December 7, 2005, the Grolier Club will open to the public a major exhibition of polar materials entitled "Books on Ice: British and American Literature of Polar Exploration." The exhibit will include many of the classics of Anglo-American expedition literature as well as more unusual materials related to the Western perception of the Arctic and Antarctica, ranging from historical materials to the printed ephemera of polar expeditions. Several rare books and other materials from SCRC collection, the library's general collections, and the Belfer Audio Laboratory will be on display. The show is curated by Prof. Deirdre C. Stam, Long Island University and Director of the New York Center for the Book, and Dr. David H. Stam, University Librarian Emeritus at Syracuse University. Click here for complete story.

Einstein Year Events 2005

Christian Dupont, SCRC

Special Collections Research Center at SUL has loaned one of its manuscripts to the exhibition organized by the Max Planck Institute in Berlin. It is an original unpublished technical essay by Einstein from the mid-1930s when he was working on unified field theory. A former associate of Einstein’s who came to teach at SU, Peter Bergmann, donated the manuscript to us in the early 1960s.

The manuscript was on display during the second part of the exhibition from late July through its closing in September.

The web site for the exhibition is: http://www.einsteinausstellung.de/ and the English version is at: http://einsteinexhibit.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/en/home

The URL that was given earlier in the Staff News for the Einstein Year events in Germany has changed; the site is available at: http://www.aei.mpg.de/english/einsteinYear05/
