General Reference Initiates Pilot Program

In response to numerous requests from students, E.S. Bird Library is piloting a computing and printing trial for SU students during the current semester. During this trial, eleven computers will have access to Microsoft Office software (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc.), networked campus printing, and student directory files. The trial workstations are located in the first floor reference area near the windows.

Following initial training before the implementation of this program, General Reference Desk staff are prepared to assist students with questions about computer access, software, or printing problems.  So far the trial has been well recieved by the students.  PPGR Department Head, Brandi Porter reports that usage of the computers has been good and so far there has been little impact on the Reference staff since "most students pretty much know what they are doing". Reference staff will also be keeping statistics and providing assessment for the project. Feedback from students about the service is also being collected.

Penelope Singer (DISC) has designed a flyer advertising the new service. This flyer will be included in the packets given to students participating in the Library Lock-in event.
