The Antje Bultmann Lemke Room Opens Its Doors

2008 Distinguished Service Award Winner

Elaine Coppola, Librarian for Government Information, Political Science and International Relations in the Social Sciences and Area Studies Department, has been named the Syracuse University Library Assembly (SULA) Distinguished Service Award winner for 2008. Elaine received her award May 13, at the Library's annual spring staff recognition event. Suzanne Thorin, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, thanked Elaine for nearly three decades of service including work as a catalog librarian, social sciences reference bibliographer, reference desk manager, and reference head before assuming her present position in Social Sciences and Area Studies in 2005. In letters of recommendation, Elaine's colleagues commended "her collegial nature, sense of humor, analytical ability, and overall sense of advocacy for individual librarians and the broad field of librarianship more generally." The Distinguished Service Award selection committee this year was chaired by Ann Horan and consisted of Julie Belle, Richard Coombs, Bill Lee and Yumiko Sato.  Many thanks for their work in choosing our winner from a large number of excellent candidates.

The University Senate Selects Representatives

With the recent election of representatives to the University Senate we would like to congratulate Natasha Cooper, Elizabeth Wallace, and Nicolette Dobrowolski for being selected as new members to the Senate as well as Adina Mulliken who will be serving for a second year.

SUL Celebrates National Library Day

11 Receive Dean's Award

In recognition of the many successful projects undertaken to transform the Library this past year, Dean Suzanne Thorin presented five special commendations to members of the SUL staff. The presentations were made during the staff recognition event held on May 13, 2008 in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons. Click here for the awards, recipients and photos.

Food for Fines Huge Success

Food for FinesThis semester's Food for Fines not only helped students clear their library debt, but also made it possible for the Library to donate more than 1200 food items to the Syracuse Downtown Emergency Services for distribution to those in need all over Onondaga County.

SU Library Goes Red

GoRedThursday, April 10th the Syracuse University Library participated in the GoRed for Women initiative by wearing red to support the American Heart Association and the "ability all women have to improve their heart health and live stronger, longer lives".

Physics Library Dissolved into Sci-Tech

Due to growing demands for faculty and laboratory spaces in the Physics Department, the Library and the Physics Department closed the Physics Library in May. Watch for photos of this project in the next edition.

Thoughts of tax filing deadlines were put aside for a while on the morning of April 15th, while SUL employees enjoyed a buffet of breakfast goodies in honor of Library Worker's Day 2008.  Cindy Cost thanked everyone for their many contributions to the success of the Library then turned the event over to breakfast pizza, coffee, fruit, pastries and conversation with colleagues.

National Library Worker's Day is celebrated each year on the Tuesday of National Library Week.  It was established in 2004 as a day to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers.  Photos

Syracuse University Once Again Named College and University Green Power Big East Conference Champion by EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that for the second straight year, Syracuse University has been named the Individual Conference Champion among Big East Conference schools for purchasing more green power than any other school in the conference. Sarah Pohl, our student worker whose by-line appears on three of our stories and who contributed several photo in this edition, has headed home to enjoy the summer. But we hope to see her back again next year. Until then - have a great summer, Sarah, and thanks for all your help.
Personnel News

Congratulations to Natasha Cooper, Elizabeth Wallace, and Nicolette Dobrowolski for being newly-elected members representing the Library at the University Senate. Congratulations also goes out to Adina Mulliken who will continue to serve on the Senate for a second year.

Donald Seibert and Mary Laverty have been hired as Temporary Music Sound Recording Catalogers/Librarians. Donald started April 24th at Bird Library, and Mary began May 15th in Belfer.

Charlotte Hess has been appointed as the new Associate University Librarian for Collections and Scholarly Communications. She will start some time in August.

Yuming Tung left the Syracuse University Library June 1st to accept a position as Director of Information Technology at S.U.N.Y. Environmental College of Science and Forestry. We wish him all the luck in his new position.  For photos of Yuming's farewell party click here.

Scott Warren has accepted the position of Librarian-Bibliographer for Science & Technology effective August 1. Scott will be located in Room 548, E. S. Bird Library.

Urmila Sharma has agreed to take over the leadership of the Library’s South Asia Cooperative Acquisitions Program from Gurnek Singh who will be retiring from the Library, effective July 31, 2008. SACAP supports the distinguished South Asia Center of Syracuse University, which is located in the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs within the Maxwell School.

Kathleen Manwaring, Robert Hodge, Andrée Clesse, Niki Gilman, Randy Money, Parkash Singh, Jacqueline Alpeter, Pamela McLaughlin, Alane Johnson, Lisa Moeckel, and Kelley Lasher were honored for their years of service to Syracuse University at the May 13, 2008 Service Recognition Event by Dean Suzanne Thorin.
