Nancy Pearl? WHO is Nancy Pearl

Lisa Bankert

When I first learned that Nancy Pearl was speaking at the annual Library Associates luncheon, I was excited.  When Mary Beth Hinton called me the week before the luncheon to ask if I was available to transport Nancy Pearl to her second speaking gig at the Onondaga County Public Library’s Central Library, I was practically giddy.

My giddiness was not shared by many.

Librarians celebrate the publication of In Persuasion Nation

On May 1, several librarians from Syracuse University Library donned temporary tattoos to celebrate May Day and the publication of George Saunders’ new book, In Persuasion Nation (Riverhead Books, 2006). In a New York Times Book Review (5/14/06), Adam Begley states: “As usual, Saunders offers a glimpse of a sad and scary near-future in which marketing swamps our lives” (p. 12).  George Saunders, Associate Professor of English, teaches in the graduate Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University.   Click here for the complete story and to see who's wearing these tattoos!

New Workplace Partnership Council Subcommittee Formed

In accordance with a memorandum of understanding between the Service Employees’ International Union Local 200United, AFL-CIO and Syracuse University in the July 1, 2004 contract, a new committee has been formed whose charge is to develop a “mutually agreeable process and document for establishing written performance appraisals to track personal and professional development of bargaining unit staff in the Library”.

Chaired by Cindy Cost (Organization Services), the committee is comprised of: Vanessa Dismuke (Acquisitions and chief steward), Marty Hanson (Access & Preservation Services dept head), Gerri McCarthy (staff development specialist), Donna Sullivan (Professional Programs & General Reference Services supervisor), Sandy Walker (Cataloging and union steward) and Annette Carbone (Organization Services – ex officio member).  The committee is a subcommittee to the Workplace Partnership Council, an overall labor/management committee established as part of the labor agreement.  The contract states that, “The intent of the WPC is to enhance labor-management communication and to encourage collaborative problem solving, meeting the interests of labor and management over the short and long term.”

This new subcommittee will propose a uniform process through which bargaining unit employees and their supervisors can jointly formulate and evaluate individual goals and identify the appropriate training/development needed to assist in accomplishing these goals.  The group will be meeting over the summer and will be seeking feedback from all library staff.  They anticipate submitting a proposal to the Workplace Partnership Council by November 2006.

For questions or comments please contact any of the subcommittee members.

Guild of Book Worker’s 100th Anniversary Exhibition

Special Collections Research Center

See the best in contemporary book work, including fine binding and artists books. The complete exhibition will open on September 19 at the Grolier Club in New York City before traveling to venues in Chicago, Salt Lake City, Portland, Dallas, and Boston.

The Guild of Book Workers was founded in 1906 to “establish and maintain a feeling of kinship and mutual interest among workers in the several hand book crafts.” Today the Guild carries on that mission through the activities of its regional chapters, exhibitions, publications, and annual Standards of Excellence seminars. For many of its 100 years the Guild’s activities were based in New York, but beginning in the 1970s, interest in the Guild began to grow nationally. With approximately 1,000 members, the Guild has evolved from being primarily focused on the art of traditional “fine” binding in leather with ornate gold tooling to embracing the book arts movement with its sculptural books and innovative structures.

Staff Recognition

On May 24,2006 Nicolette Schneider and Peter Verheyen spoke on the digitization of SUL primary resources and the implications there-of on public services at the New York Library Resource Council. Digitization Expo and Vendor Showcase near Buffalo. In addition to Nicolette and Peter, there were also 5 other speakers who focused on the Ohio Memory Project; the digitization of Rochester Images and Rochester City Directories; the Erie Canal Time Machine; UBdigit, Buffalo's teaching image collection; and the use of the American Memory Project in primary and secondary education.

In addition to these speakers there was also a well-represented vendors area with representatives from digitization service providers. The Expo was held in an area usually reserved for antique auctions (presenting a few challenges for speakers) and very well attended with attendees coming from throughout the Central and Western New York regions, many of them staying for all the presentations.

Many questions were asked and the day proved as useful for the presenters as attendees. More info on the Expo can be found at (http://hurstassociates.blogspot.com/2006/05/digitization-expo-was-success-or-i-can.html).
