Libnet1 & Libnet2 outage: December 30, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

LISD is scheduling a maintenance outage for both libnet1 & libnet2 servers for
Tuesday, December 30, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Services that
depend on the Library server and will be unavailable during this time
include:

Public printing (staff printing will not be affected)
The BSD-Systems Project area (L: drive)
The Digital Imaging Lab project area (L: drive)
The Special Collections project area (L: drive)
LISD
F: drive
G: drive
H: drive

This outage will allow us to perform maintenance and configuration changes
to both of these servers.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank everyone for your
cooperation.

Library server outage: December 30, 7:30 am to 9:30 am

LISD is scheduling a maintenance outage for the Library server for
Tuesday, December 30, from 7:30 am to 9:30 am. Services that
depend on the Library server and will be unavailable during this time
include:

staff printing
Illiad print and email files
The 5 student-use machines along the windows in Media
The Pubmaps PC
The Jaws workstation in Reference

The F:, G:, and H: drives are not located on the Library server and
should be unaffected.

The reason for the maintenance outage is to attempt to replace a
damaged disk in the server. LISD discovered that a disk in the Library server had failed. The
Library server has a fault-tolerant design that is currently keeping
the server up and running in a reduced performance state.
However, any further disk losses could result in a failure of the
Library server. Therefore, we need to try to correct this problem as
soon as possible. We need to do this during business hours to
have access to outside technical staff who may be assisting in this
process.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank everyone for your
cooperation.

New subnets will be added on Friday

Friday morning, between 6:00 -7:00 AM, CMS will add two new subnets to our current Bird library computer network. This will give us about 500 more network addresses. For the past a few years, we have increased our computer devices significantly and we are almost running out our capacity. This change will take care of this issue for a long time. We don't expect any difference for staff and public workstations because the rebooting will adjust the network settings. The settings on computer servers will need to be adjusted by the system administrators. Most system level work will take place late night on Thursday or early Friday. This change only affects the Bird library network. Sci-tech branches are on different networks. If you experience anything unusual, please report to x4300. Thanks!

The network change will require LISD to reboot all our Novell/Windows servers early morning on Friday, so the network login will not be available until 7:30. Sorry for the inconvenience it may cause for a few staff who start early in the morning.

Wilson Databases Changes

Wilson Business Periodicals Index and the Index to Legal Periodicals will no longer be available to SU Library users as of Wednesday, December 17, 2003. Applied Science & Technology, Biological & Agricultural Index and Essay & General Literature Index will be unavailable on Wednesday, December 17 but will be re-instated by OCLC/FirstSearch on Thursday, December 18.

For additional information on this change, please feel free to contact Nancy Turner, Electronic Resources Librarian, at 443-2237 or nbturner@syr.edu.

WebMail for Pegasus mail will be permanently shut down next week

Just another quick reminder. Webmail service for Pegasus mail will be shut down next week. This will not delete your old mail. Your old Pegasus mail folder will stay in your H: drive. For more details, please read the following message.
Thanks! --LISD

>> sent out on 11/06/2003
Background
WebMail for Pegasus mail was a service we introduced to library in early 2001, which gave library staff the possibility of checking new e-mail messages from any Internet access point. It was a frequently used service by many library staff members. However, it has its limitations such as it can only handle new messages but cannot display already read messages.

Current status
Now we are all in the GroupWise environment. GroupWise has its own webmail interface (http://webmail.syr.edu) which allows users to access all their messages and calendars. The log files on the old webmail server show only three accounts have accessed the old server in last month. LISD feels there is no need to keep the old Webmail service running. We are scheduling to permanently shut it down by the end of this semester. The webmail link on Staff Website will be pointed to the GroupWise webmail only.

Questions?
If you still need to access the old webmail service or you have any questions, please contact LISD by sending a message to lisd@syr.edu

Open Access Journals added

600 new peer-reviewed journals are now accessible through the Full Text Journal Locator. Freely available from the DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals, these journals represent a wide variety of subject areas, from information science (Journal of Digital Information) to chemistry (BMC Biochemistry) and the fine arts (Scope: an on-line journal of film studies). Journals can be located through a title or subject search from http://libwww.syr.edu/research/ej/index.html.

The Directory website defines itself as a "service that provides access to quality controlled Open Access Journals. The Directory aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use an appropriate quality control system, and it will not be limited to particular languages or subject areas. The aim of the Directory is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact."

LibChat changes

On December 17, LibChat hours will change for the intersession. LibChat will be open from 11-1, Monday through Friday, December 17 through January 12.

Also, the reference services web page (libwww.syr.edu/information/reference/index.html) will change on December 17 when we implement a "smart button" to better inform patrons about the availability of LibChat. With the "smart button," the LibChat icon and link to the service will only appear on the page when the service is staffed.

As always, if you have questions about LibChat please contact Tasha Cooper, nacoop01@syr.edu, or Tom Keays, htkeays@syr.edu.

Full Text Journal Locator Enhancement

The Full Text Journal Locator page has been enhanced to include browsing by subject in addition to searching by title keyword. You can try this out at : http://libwww.syr.edu/research/ej/index.html

Please remember the search is generated by our vendor Serials Solutions and the subject headings are not controlled locally. The subject headings are derived from Ulrich's Directory of Serials. However, the subject search does provide some exciting new functionality for users in discovering electronic journals to which they have access through Syracuse University Library.

As always, please let Nancy Turner, Electronic Resources Librarian, know if you have suggestions, questions or concerns.

Lexis Nexis Print & E-mail

Problem Solved!

The printing and e-mail functions are now working properly on Lexis Nexis' Academic -- for some time this has been a problem for our remote users.

Thanks to the upgrade of our Ezproxy software for authentication of remote users by Michael DeSalvo, these two systems are now compatible and we can take full advantage of this important database and all its features.

Staff Training and Development Web Site

I am pleased to announce the Library's Staff Training and Development web site for SUL staff is up an running.

To access it go to the Library Staff Web Site at http://libweb.syr.edu/ and then click on the link labeled Training. It contains information on training courses offered for SUL staff on a month to month basis, course descriptions of the courses offered, a yearly training calendar depicting courses offered month by month, their times and locations, and much more.

Of particular interest may be the Training Resources link which offers various training tools such training guides, additional links, and tutorials for GroupWise, MS Office Applications, DreamWeaver, HTML and XML. If you click the Training Resources link additional links appear under titles labeled Documentation, Links to Other Websites, Sites to Free Online Courses, Training and Development Sites, and Library Organizations. For example, the Documentation title lists links to in-house developed documentation and mini web tutorials for GroupWise, New Features of Office 2000 and the XP Operating System. Therefore, if you have questions on the GroupWise Address Book, or how to create a signature file, or a personal folder, simply click on the link labeled GroupWise Documentation to find the appropriate web tutorial. Links to Other Web Sites contains links to external created documentation. Again, please take some time to explore the wealth of resources offered.

This site also contains the Training Request/ Report Form which all staff should complete before registering for training and then submit it to receive training credits.

The site will also streamline our training registration process. SUL staff will soon be able to register for training courses online through this web site. Please note that the registration form and process of registering online along with the Contact Us form are not yet functional. This will come in the near future.

If there are any questions regarding the Staff Training and Development web site, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at racreigh@syr.edu. Although I am on maternity leave I will be checking email periodically.
