Another Virus Spreading Around Campus

A new virus is spreading around campus. SU's email virus scanner cannot yet detect it. Multiple people within the library are reporting getting email from SU and external sources that have attachments. These attachments may appear to be text files, but they are not. Please do not open any attachments unless you were expecting them. McAfee has not yet updated their virus definition files, so we are not yet protected from this virus.

Thanks,

Help Desk

New Virus Deletes Word and Excel Files

A new variant of the MyDoom virus is spreading rapidly. This virus is more destructive than other recent viruses, because it deletes Word, Excel, and image files after infecting the computer. LISD has begun rolling out a McAfee update that can help protect against the virus, but please do not open any unexpected attachments, even from someone you know. The virus spoofs the from address, and has various subject lines and attachment names.

If the virus executes, you may see a fake error message on your PC that says "File is corrupted. "The message can also be "File can not be opened" or "Unable to open specified file". Notepad may be run, displaying non-readable characters.." (source: McAfee website).

If you see any of these error messages, please contact LISD at x4300 or lisd@syr.edu.

New Look for Design and Applied Arts Index

Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI) is now available through a different interface -- the Internet Database Service from CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts). The database can be access via the Library's catalog and the Databases Main Menu.

DAAI is the main bibliographic source for current material and information in the areas of design and the applied arts worldwide -- an indispensable resource for researchers, students, and librarians in the field, as well as for professional designers and artists.

The database also provides access to the Periodicals Directory, an international directory of design and craft journals, and to the Education Directory, an international directory of universities and colleges that offer courses in design and craft subjects.

LISD Will Rollout Another Microsoft Patch

Microsoft has released another critical security patch. This patch closes a security hole that could be exploited by a worm similar to the blaster worm that hit campus last Summer. To close the hole, LISD will be rolling out the Microsoft patch beginning at 8:30 am on Tuesday, Feb. 17th.

During the patch rollout, you may see a dialog box that shows files being copied. Please do not cancel the operation -- these files need to be copied to complete the patch installation. When the installation is completed, you will receive a message that tells you the patch installed successfully. Your PC will reboot automatically once you click on OK.If you receive an error message, please contact LISD at x4300 or LISD@syr.edu.

We also encourage everyone to patch any of their home computers that are running Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP (and are used on the Internet) with the lastest critical security patches . Hackers have already developed exploits for some of these holes. For more information on the patches, you can visit Microsoft's web site at http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/20040210_windows.asp

Spyware Spreading Via AOL Instant Messaging

A spyware program is spreading via AOL Instant Messaging. While LISD does not support AOL Instant Messager, some people has installed it on their PCs, so we want to warn you of this new spyware package. If downloaded, the spyware will send information about your PC and internet browsing habits to a third-party and may slow down the performance of your computer. Your buddy list will also be harvested, and everyone on it will receive an instant message from you that contains the spyware.

The message to be alert to will claim to contain a humorous game about Osama Bin Laden. The name of the program, which may be altered in the message, is Buddylinks. If you receive such a message, even from a trusted source, do not click on the link or load the software.

For more information on this program, visit CNN's site at:

refurbished PCs for sale

Recently, LISD has replaced over 40 public workstations with new Dell computers. We have refurbished the old machines and now offer library staff a chance to buy them. These computers are EDP machines with a Pentium (233 MH) CPU, 64+ MB RAM, a 2GB hard disk, and a 15" color monitor plus keyboard and mouse. These machines are not adequate for business use but may still be suitable for casual home computing needs. The machines have been reconfigured with a plain Windows 2000 operating system (no extra software comes with the computer) and will be sold as it is for $20 plus NYS Tax (7.25%). Library employees who are interested in buying these computers should read the attached form and follow the instruction. The deadline is next Wednesday, 2/18/2004.

LISD will Roll Out Microsoft Patch

LISD will roll out a new Microsoft patch beginning at 8:30 am on Wed., Feb. 11, 2004. This patch closes some security holes in Internet Explorer that are already being exploited on SU's campus. To close these holes, Microsoft had to elminate some functionality. After the patch is installed, you can no longer use the following URL syntaxes to log into web sites:

http(s)://username:password@server/resource.ext

username:password@host.com

Instead, you will have to navigate to the site and use the login box.

While the patch is installing, you may see a box pop up that says files are being copied. Please do not cancel this box - just let the copy run. After the install is complete, you will see another box that tells you the patch has installed successfully. Your PC will reboot automatically once you click on OK.

If you see a message that the patch failed to install, please contact LISD at x4300 or LISD@syr.edu.

Paper - Type - Image

Paper - Type - Image: Elements of the Fine Press Book.

The exhibition features exemplars of fine presswork from the Special Collections Research Center.

The exhibit is on display from February 9 - March 26, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., in the 6th floor gallery of E.S. Bird Library.

http://libwww.syr.edu/information/spcollections/bkomonth/

The selections that make up this exhibit inevitably pose the same questions that arise whenever one attempts to determine the characteristics of a fine press work. Does such a printed item, for example, have to have a classic text (or at least one that has been deemed somehow an appropriate one)? Is it essential that it be letterpress-printed on a specialty stock in order to qualify for this assessment? Must it incorporate images that have been painstakingly rendered by hand or in a limited edition through a number of labor-intensive graphic arts processes? Is the manner of its sewing and binding alone a sufficient justification for regarding it as a fine press product?

The guiding principle in this particular exhibition has been to identify examples of relatively recent works, loosely deemed, within the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center that conjure up a sense of a cohesive book or print project in which the individual components have a unity that overcomes their disparateness. The publications that are displayed within these five cases in this foyer are, after all, largely collaborative efforts. It would have been extremely difficult for a single individual to accomplish
all of the tasks that are associated with a book within this category. A successful fine press volume, it could be argued, must manage to convince us that a single vision of the work was effectively conceived, communicated, and executed, regardless of how many collaborators and production steps may have been involved in its creation. We invite you to explore for yourself how simple elements-type and paper, ink and image-can be variously combined into an artistic whole, a fine press book.

Curator of Rare Books and Printed Materials

Trial of Computing Reviews through May 8

A trial for Computing Reviews has been established through March 8, 2004. Computing Reviews (CR), is a joint effort between Reviews.com, a publisher of reviews of academic and technical literature, and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), the leading society of academic computer scientists.

CR is like the book review section of the New York Times, targeted to computer science literature. And CR has the advantage of reviews linking directly to the full text of the items being reviewed (journal articles, books, conference proceedings, etc.) from all publishers - ACM, IEEE, etc.

To access this database, go to:

http://www.reviews.com
A password is not required, but access is available from SU campus only.

This service has been specially created for university music departments and music libraries, and will allow tutors the opportunity to plan course work and assignments around a much wider collection of material than is usually available from the library. Playlists can be created in the knowledge that students will have access to these recordings, through their computers, on and off campus at all times, eliminating the usual problem of a library's only copy of a recording not being available to more than one student at time.

Clicking on any genre or category will give you an alphabetical list, by composer, of all CD titles included in that section.

Click on any title to bring up that CD, which will automatically begin playing from the first track. Individual tracks can also be selected for listening or adding to the playlist function, a feature that enables course tutors to put together selected works for student assignments or course work.

Click on to "About this Recording" to obtain recording and background information notes. There is also an advanced search page, into which you can enter as many or as few fields as you wish. If, for instance, you enter "violin" into the instrument field, and "Italian" into the Composer Nationality field, the search engine will display all recordings of Italian violin music, concertos and chamber music.

Trial of ComDisDome through March 31

A trial of Communication Sciences and Disorders Dome (ComDisDome) has been established through March 31, 2004. According to its website, this database is "the premier information service for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and students in the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders." The Dome helps scholars to identify and connect to information in the field, including, Books, Journal Articles, Dissertations, Grants, Authors, Institutions and Websites.

To access the trial, direct your browser to: www.comdisdome.com/dome/index.jsp
No password is required, but the trial is available on SU campus only.
