LISTSERV upgrade Saturday, March 27

On Saturday March 27, from 7:00 to 12:00, we will be upgrading Listserv to
version 1.8e. During this time, Listserv will not be distributing mail,
and the listserv web interface will be unavailable. Mail and commands sent
to Listserv will be held until the upgrade is completed- they will be
delayed but not lost.

Listserv commands and list configuration options are largely unchanged in
1.8e. Following are some things you may notice:

o Major functionality changes involve the web interface:
- significant improvements for list owners, including a wizards capability
- list members can manage list subscriptions via the web.

o You may notice there is no longer a link to get a listserv password
on the main web page. The process of getting a listserv password is
integrated with the login process- if a password is needed, Listserv
will help youget it at the point when it is required.

Antivirus scanning is included with 1.8e, although we expect to be using
Syracuse University's AV scanning as well. Initially, virus emails will be
cleaned and forwarded on to the intended list. In the future, we hope to
delete virus emails completely. In summary, we do plan to do AV scanning,
but the details will be worked out over time.

We are testing spam scanning, although this is not part of the upgrade.
We will let you know how this works out.

Please remember, unless otherwise stated these changes will not take
effect until Saturday, March 27. If you have questions about the upgrade,
you can send them to: SU List Manager

J.P. Carley to Discuss the Libraries of King Henry VIII

Friday, April 2, 2004
4pm
Hillyer Room
E.S. Bird Library

J.P. Carley, Distinguished Research Professor at York University in Toronto, will lecture on April 2, 2004, at 4 p.m. in the Hillyer Room on the sixth floor of E.S. Bird Library on the Syracuse University campus. His lecture is titled "The Libraries of King Henry VIII: The Ones that Got Away."

Celebrated for his magnificence, daring in his defiance of papal authority, and restless in his choice of wives, Henry VIII was also one of the most intelligent and widely read monarchs of the Renaissance. In the wake of the destruction of the monasteries, he acquired a vast quantity of books, and with them filled the shelves of his palace libraries. His is one of the foundation collections of the British Library-though, over the centuries, many interesting items escaped to the New World.

J.P. Carley specializes in the late medieval and early modern period. His previous work has included editions of texts from Glastonbury Abbey and a general history of the Abbey. He has co-edited a collection of essays on the Tudor translator Henry Parker, Lord Morley; and he is one of the editors in the Corpus of British Medieval Library Catalogues series published by the British Library; The Books of King Henry VIII and His Wives is a companion piece to his volume on The Libraries of King Henry VIII in this series.

This event is part of The History of the Book Seminar Series at Syracuse University, sponsored by the University Library; the Dean's Office, College of Arts and Sciences; the Departments of Anthropology English, History, Philosophy, and Religion, and of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics; and the School of Information Studies.

This event is free and open to the public.

New Virus Not Detected by Email Virus Scanning

A new virus, bagle.j, hit SU's campus last night. The email virus scanner was not yet able to detect it, so a large amount of virus infected mail got through to email accounts on campus. Please do not open any attachments unless you were expecting to receive the attachment. Many people will have suspicious email this morning. Please just delete it.

McAfee has now released a new file that can detect this virus, and LISD will roll it out this morning. However, we have been getting new viruses at the rate of 1 to 2 a day during the past few days, and the pace of new viruses does not appear to be slowing, so please be extra cautious with email.

Thanks,

LISD Asks: Please always leave printers turned on

LISD is requesting from now on that all printers in every library be left on at all times. This includes staff, public, and lab printers. One of our current projects requires us to update software on all of the printers and make configuration changes at times when they are not in use. We appreciate your good intentions to save power and would like to make you aware that all of our printers have power saving features built in. It is better for the equipment, and uses less energy if they are always left on. The updates begin tonight, so please remember to leave your printer on.

Thank you everyone for your cooperation.
