New Versions of SciFinder Scholar Available

SciFinder Scholar 2006 is a major upgrade for the Windows platform with improved search tools. SciFinder Scholar 2006 for Windows requires Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, or NT 4.0. A web browser is needed to access full text via ChemPort, online Help, and Internet resources within the Tools menu. Plug-ins must be installed in the Netscape and Firefox plug-ins and components folders for some features in ChemPort, e.g., Reference Linking. The plug-in is installed automatically during the SciFinder Scholar 2006 installation. Java and Javascript must be enabled and cookies must be accepted for some features in Chemport.

SciFinder Scholar OS X is the long-awaited version for Macintosh OS X. Researchers should see improved performance and fewer problems with retrieving full-text of articles via ChemPort. SciFinder Scholar OS X requires Macintosh OS X operating system 10.2 or newer. A web browser is needed to access full text via ChemPort, online Help, and Internet resources within the Tools menu. Java and Javascript must be enabled and cookies must be accepted for some features in Chemport.

Visit the Library's SciFinder Scholar webpage to download the new software and users manuals: http://library.syr.edu/research/database/scifinder/

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts Linking Unavailable January 27

The following message has been received from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts:

Dear CSA Customer:

We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties that have forced us to bring down the linking server. Links to full-text, local holdings, ILL, document delivery services, and OpenURL resolvers will be unavailable during this time.

This was done in response to a large number of our customers complaining of very slow or non-responsive service. Our development staff is aware of the problem and in the process of streamlining our linking processes. Linking features will be back online as soon as we can introduce that module of code without significantly impacting the performance of searching CSA Illumina. We expect this to take no longer than 24 hours.

We appreciate your patience while we work to correct this problem.

ReferenceUSA

An announcement from ReferenceUSA to its Customers:

Due to automated "theft" of data, ReferenceUSA will be changing its access routines on December 1, 2003.

This means the library’s remote users (i.e. – those users not physically in the library; and, incidentally, if your library doesn’t offer the remote option this discussion won’t apply to your library) will be given a code when they view their first results screen. They will then have to enter this code to move on to their next results screen, and a new code for each additional screen they view.

The remote user will still be able to access all of the data retrieved from their search as they have been doing; however, it simply means they will have to enter a different code for each additional screen they view. Please note too, this requirement will only be seen by the library’s remote users (if your library has the remote option); those accessing our data in the library will not see this step.
