New Literature Database Available

Through the New York State Library's NOVEL Program, a new database for literature research is available to SU Library users:

The Twayne Authors Series is the premier literary reference resource series comprising Twayne's U.S. Authors, Twayne's English Authors, and Twayne's World Authors. Each of these individual titles provides literary criticism for approximately 200 authors, bringing the total number of authors covered in the Series to nearly 600. Each author selected for coverage is tied to the high school and college curriculum.

The Twayne Authors Series offers criticism by scholars on hundreds of years of literature--from Aristophanes to Bharati Mukherjee. It provides critical introductions to the lives and works of writers, to the history and influence of literary movements, or the development of literary genres. Primarily devoted to critical interpretation and discussion of authors's works, these studies take account of major literary trends and important contributions to scholarship and criticism, and provide new critical insights and original points of view.

The Twayne Authors Series is structured in a consistent format: All titles feature comment elements, such as a chronology, a biography, a comprehensive critical analysis, and an annotated bibliography. The discussions of each author in the series are between 175-200 printed pages.

To access this database directly, go to:

Research Starting Points, a New Web Resource

A vast array of online and print resources is available to researchers at Syracuse University Library. Experienced researchers have learned which search tools best serve their needs and how to efficiently navigate within and between them. However, this multitude of choices is quite daunting for the uninitiated. In response, the Electronic Resources Advisory Group has created a user-friendly, quick start page for undergraduate students and others new to the research process. Initially, it will be linked from the Databases Main Menu, E-Journals: Full Text Journal Locator and Instruction pages. Take a look!

Enhanced Databases Menu

The Databases Main Menu has been enhanced with a new way to locate databases by types of content. Check it out from the Main Menu when you click on the link Databases by Content Type. From this page, you can browse within these categories:

  • Audio Files

  • Electronic Books and Text

  • Full Text

  • Photographs and Images databases

  • Reference Works

  • Statistics and Numeric Sets

This enhancement will make it simpler to identify SU Library databases that include non-textual content requested required multimedia presentations as well as allowing users to more easily see what full text content is available to them online.

As always, comments and feedback to Nancy Turner, Electronic Resources Librarian, are encouraged. Thanks to the ER Advisory Group (Maryjane Poulin, Pamela Thomas, Michael Pasqualoni and Wendy Bousfield) for their valuable input in developing this enhancement.

SULinks Live! on August 3

Join the SULinks implementation teams on Tuesday, August 3 from 9 am to 11 am in the Hillyer Room as we celebrate and update staff on SULinks, our OpenURL server.

Over the summer, SULinks has grown from a few "enabled" index and abstract source databases to 77, in all subject areas and from many vendors. Over 7,000 of our online journals now link out from these databases, serving as full text "targets". In addition, thousands of titles are linked to full text article databases like ProQuest and EbscoMasterfile.

This session will provide an opportunity for the Implementation Team and the Public Services Team to demonstrate how the SULinks service works, listen to your input and answer questions.

DAAI is the main bibliographic source for current material and information in the areas of design and the applied arts worldwide -- an indispensable resource for researchers, students, and librarians in the field, as well as for professional designers and artists.

The database also provides access to the Periodicals Directory, an international directory of design and craft journals, and to the Education Directory, an international directory of universities and colleges that offer courses in design and craft subjects.

Full Text Journal Locator Enhancement

The Full Text Journal Locator page has been enhanced to include browsing by subject in addition to searching by title keyword. You can try this out at : http://libwww.syr.edu/research/ej/index.html

Please remember the search is generated by our vendor Serials Solutions and the subject headings are not controlled locally. The subject headings are derived from Ulrich's Directory of Serials. As always, please let Nancy Turner, Electronic Resources Librarian, know if you have suggestions, questions or concerns.

Subject Searching on Full Text Journal Locator

Serials Solutions has introduced Subject Browsing for e-journals as a feature enhancement for all of its services. This new functionality is now apparent when you do a search from the Full Text Journal Locator at :
http://libwww.syr.edu/research/ej/index.html

Subject Browsing allows patrons to quickly find e-journals available at
to them by browsing nearly 700 subject headings from Ulrich's
Periodicals Directory™. Patrons can link directly to a list of titles in a
given subject area. (These are stable links that you might want to consider using on your subject pages). Results include links to the full-text journal, as well as holding dates.
